We have supported virtual exercises, including in an evaluation role. The use of online platforms for incident management teams has proved challenging for companies but also brought benefits. This indicates it is likely we will see an increase in virtual communications during future emergency response

Peter Taylor provided support to a webinar organized by the Global Initiative for West, Central and Southern Africa (GI WACAF). He spoke on Spill Impact Mitigation Assessment (SIMA) as a tool to support decision making during contingency planning or incident response.

Contribution to webinar

Peter Taylor was the consultant and primary facilitator for a workshop held in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The event aimed to revitalize and energize the development of regional cooperation for marine pollution incidents. A series of short and medium term recommendations for the next steps were agreed during the workshop.

Preparedness and response workshop for Eastern Africa and the Western Indian Ocean 

Petronia was the lead consultancy company chosen to develop a new national plan for Ireland. The project has reached completion, with the publication of the plan and supporting documents, available here.

The national plan provides the framework for local authorities, ports and industry operators' maritime pollution preparedness.

Peter Taylor helped organize a workshop on the approval of dispersant products and the authorization of their use in Azerbaijan's waters. This was attended by the relevant government organizations and the private sector. The key objective was to encourage the development of suitable national dispersant regulation and related procedures.

Peter Taylor was the lead IMO consultant for a regional workshop held in Malaysia. The event was part of the process to implement the ASEAN Regional Oil Spill Contingency Plan. This Plan provides a mechanism whereby ASEAN Member States can request for and provide mutual assistance in response to significant oil pollution.

More than 100 people took part over 2 days. the event involved the mobilization of international resources and close liaison with the Danish authorities. Peter performed a role in the Simulation Cell, primarily covering oiled wildlife and environmental interests.

A successful trial of herder was held in Kazakhstan; 400 l of artificially weathered Kashagan crude oil was released in controlled conditions and allowed to spread. When too thin for ignition, herder was applied around the slick. After chemical herding, the slick was able to be ignited and burn with an efficiency of >95%.

Dispersant use can mitigate the overall impact of an oil spill by removing oil from the sea’s surface (or avoiding oil surfacing in the case of subsea use), thereby protecting marine mammals, birds, coastal habitats and shorelines. Peter Taylor was commissioned by IPIECA to write a report on good praactice in relation to the storage of dispersant stockpiles.

It simulated a topside release of crude oil from an oil installation in the northern North Sea, bringing threats to various ecological and socio-economic resources in the UK and Norway.
